WAJIB

Abu Shadi is a divorced father and teacher in Nazareth. Shadi, his son, arrives from Rome after years abroad to help his father with his sister’s wedding, hand delivering the invitations to each guest per local custom. As the pair spend the day together, the tense relationship comes to a head.

Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir directs this lively, deceptively low-key road movie, which drives up alongside its conflicted leads, deftly performed by a real-life father and son. Exploring the clash between tradition and modernity, Wajib shows how humor can be a powerful tool of resistance.
