i don't know where to start with this one. rosalind russell biting paulette goddard's leg. joan fontaine showing up. joan crawford saying "i'm bored" as she throws food at her maid from the comfort of a bubble bath. surprised, but oh so happy this exists. also, i want a whole separate movie about the train to reno.
Snappy dialogue and amazing, fabulous, incredible outfits make this idiotic explosion of heteronormativity quite a lot of fun. I Imagine the predominantly female cinemagoers who saw this in 1939 could enjoy not just the outfits they could never afford, but also seeing how unhappy rich women are, with their cheating husbands, backstabbing friends, and shallow lives. A "Women's Film" but by no means a feminist one.
Offensively tedious. I'm not quite sure how one would be ok with the shallowness of all these poorly-written female characters, like they were all awful. Was this really written by women? Because it feels like a man's nightmarish perspective of what the consumerist late-30s American women were upto. Were people really like this?
Broad, course, vulgar, dumb. I hate this film, as entertaining (admittedly) as it is. No one survives. Why is it held in such high regard? This is surely one of the low points of the great George Cukor's career. He had too much affection for women to caricature them so cruelly.
Do you ever feel like you need a multiplicity of glamorous 30s-era girlfriends to gas you up because your boyfriend is being a total asshole? Well if you do then check out this flick and while you're at it maybe dump that sucker and get with someone who, I don't know, wouldn't have an affair with Joan Crawford and publicly humiliate you in front of your friends.
The original poster's tagline says "THE WOMEN: 'It's all about men!'" and the characters' motivations confirm it, that's the problem. I don't think it's that interesting to watch a woman's film about men. I'd rather watch a woman's film about women, so... Yes, great actresses. Yes, good direction. But the plot is boring and its machism is overwhelming. This movie got old decades ago.
