After enduring a house made of existential dread and Zuzu’s petals dropped on my head by Frank Capra, I’ll mosey on home and curl up in front of the crackling Technicolor of another classic film that the universe gave a second chance: The Wizard of Oz. It’s pure joy, even if it was a legendary nightmare to put together. In other words: the holiday season defined.

It was a terrific, fresh experience. It’s not always a great movie but it’s one that’s so chargedevery moment of it, charged with magic. It also struck me as unusual, among other attributes, for a Hollywood movie in 1939 or for that matter ever to tell it’s tale so purely in the realm of a fantasy’s allegory.

Fleming’s direction is fast-paced and despite the kitsch imagery and all-round wholesomeness of his heroine, there is a briskness of wit and spirit that is almost, but not quite, subversive. Furthermore, brave puns are scatted like the straw from a monkey-ravaged scarecrow.
