If there has ever been an astoundingly well-made film, it is this. The atmosphere created by the director is so thick, you feel you are breathing in the air that the Corleones breathe, experiencing their lives that are enveloped around a life of crime, yet a life of faith, love and personal honour, so different from the meaninglessness of ordinary life. A deeply moving tragedy with great psychological insight.
Tom's early trip to Hollywood seems a tacit acknowledgement this story is the product of fantasy—likely no crime lord was ever as honorable or virtuous as Vito Corleone is depicted here. And yet I totally accept Brando's romanticized portrayal of the Godfather, just as I'm chilled by Michael's anti-baptism during the finale; a man denouncing Satan and his works even as he willingly becomes evil incarnate.
The Godfather is a classic. To not love the movie is some sort of betrayal of the medium. But let’s be honest. Outside of the set design, music, and general ambiance, The Godfather is not remarkable. Maybe we love it in spite of its cardboard characters, stilted dialogue, and plot weirdness?
Without a doubt my favorite movie. While other movies maybe have small problems, The Godfather just seems perfect. The cinematography, acting, direction, editing, story, sound and everything else is perfect. Not a single mistake! It's maybe not as emotional as The Shawshank Redemption or Schindler's List, but it's still a great masterpiece. It will always remain my favorite movie!
Sempre relutei em ver O Poderoso Chefão por preguiça. Nunca me interessei por filmes de gangsters, sem falar da longa duração deste. Mas preciso reconhecer que o filme é brilhante. As horas correm e a narrativa, embora bastante tradicional, é extremamente cativante. Uma aula sobre o que é um bom filme Hollywoodiano.
Widely considered one of the greatest films of all time, The Godfather is probably the pinnacle of gangster dramas, and maybe all dramas. Offering an incredibly complex and interesting story, The Godfather focuses more on the crime aspects of the mafia, rather than the later and more family oriented Goodfellas. The Godfather is an all around solid movie.
