Synopsis

After his wife’s death, a husband recalls their first meeting and marriage. She was much younger than him. She used to pawn some things to an antique shop, in order to make little money. As he becomes increasingly intrigued by her mind-set, the husband finds out that she was once an orphan.

Our take

An ultra-minimal drama by Mani Kaul, based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story, The Meek One. With its ingenious use of light, this film becomes another intriguing chapter in Kaul’s body of work where he explores theories of space and time in narrative cinema.
