Synopsis

Made between Iron Curtain division and reunification, this early märchenfilme from East German filmmaker Paul Verhoeven reinvigorates old folklore to reflect the ideology and politics of its time. A faithful, fascinating live-action adaptation of Wilhelm Hauff’s classic fairytale.
