Critics reviews

The Bad Seed is fun. Gleefully, unapologetically and relevantly fun. In its own way, the tweaked ending just makes the picture even more inadvertently subversive and experimental, calling out to the audience that you’ve just seen a motion picture and haven’t you enjoyed watching this cute little killer?

Even more simply mounted than There’s Always Tomorrow, LeRoy’s Bad Seed mostly feels like a filmed stage work. Without much attempt to open the play up, it remains almost all interiors… The set doesn’t look remotely lived-in; one gets the sense that the single mother and daughter who reside here wouldn’t know what drawers the forks or socks are in. But its neutral, anonymous interiors work well to create a blank slate, much like the emotionless pig-tailed monster at its center.
