After his long-lost son is suddenly thrust back into his life, charismatic con artist Karabas takes to the road with his two wives, swindling everyone they encounter along their path. But Uluk soon disagrees with this lifestyle, forcing Karabas to choose between fatherhood and his scheming ways.

Though still confined by the larger dictates of their gender roles and class, Uluk and Zhipara’s relationship is the film’s most uplifting (and perishable) rebuttal to the systems of patriarchy that disempower women and children by denying them their capacity to love.

It works best when it’s giving us an unvarnished look at the uneasy coexistence of the mystical, superstitious past with the venal, grasping present, and the hardscrabble lives of the modern Kyrgyz underclass, as captured in Tudor Vladimir Panduru’s understatedly gritty camerawork. It is less successful tracking the rather soap-operatic interactions between the makeshift family.
