Our take

Reminiscent of Fatih Akin’s visceral immigrant tales, Burhan Qurbani’s Berlin-set debut wrestles with the forbidding strictures of religion and tradition. Threaded by interlocking stories that deal with intolerance and homophobia, Shahada questions what it means to be Muslim in the western world.
