Synopsis

Shostakovich encourages his pupil Fleischmann to write an opera based on the Chekhov story ’’Rothschild’s violin". Fleischmann is killed during Leningrad’s siege. Shostakovich completes the orchestration, but is advied to suppress the opera, during Stalin campaign against “rootless cosmopolitans”.
