Our take

Although imbued with the eerie atmosphere and barren landscapes of a western, and the culminating tension of a thriller, Paulistas remains a documentary—acutely crafted and humanely resonant. A surprising and absorbing portrait of a place: two deserted rural regions of Brazil, devoid of their youth.
