Directed by Shyam Benegal
India, 1975
Drama, Crime
  • Hindi
  • English

Synopsis

A man whose wife is abducted by a region’s rulers seeks to have the men prosecuted for their crime, but no one will help him.

Our take

Based on a play by the noted playwright Vijay Tendulkar, Nishant is a compelling comment on tyrannical social hierarchies which unapologetically enable the oppressor. This visceral Shyam Benegal film is a haunting recreation of rural India’s feudal way of life.

Critics reviews

It’s excruciating to watch, but it inspires rage like few other films do. Benegal, working from a script by noted playwright Vijay Tendulkar, indicts not only the wealthy family but also the poor townspeople who are complacent in the family’s corruption.
