A real (reel?) mess. Even Zulawski's trademark camera work and two incredibly watchable leads can't salvage this. The themes of madness, childhood trauma, enigmatic (sexual) relations are fascinating, but the film never really does them justice and just seems to drag on.
Rewatch after maybe 4 years...highly underrated in Zulawski's oeuvre, somewhat difficult if you don't know at least *some* French (the script is steeped in wordplay), and really funny. Marceau absolutely goes for it...might be the best performance in a Zulawski film after Adjani in Possession.
This director understands madness. Madness is a spectrum. It's also a freedom from conventions. All the things you want to say and do. Today the amount of fear we live with is increasing. Which also means we lose our sense of humor. Which is why his films are so funny. Your ability to enjoy his films has to do with your willingness to go on the ride.
