Honestly I wasn't able to pay attention to much of this movie for a variety of reasons. But there were these moments of trying to bring to life Christ's more challenging teachings and I found it to be really meaningful. Other stuff seemed kind of boring. Like the plot was boring. Not cuz I know the story but cuz of the mechanics of the Peter/Mary conflict. That said it's a superb riff on why Christianity is doomed.
The film clears the Biblical character from being confused with Mary of Bethany, who was a prostitute. A Pope in AD 591 had confused the two Marys. The Catholic Church recently cleared Mary Magdalene's name. The film however reaffirms the Da Vinci Code theory that Mary Magdalene was a participant of the Last Supper. The music and sound management are very good. The landscape and flora are not of the Holy Land.
For those who seek light and listen to the word of the Lord, this movie is food for the soul, especially in these days when we remember the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who took away the sin of the world. Rooney Mara is pure light in this part, she has this halo around her face that made me cry and still. Great cinematography. Impresive acting. Jóhann Jóhannsson may your soul rest in peace.
