Starts off very well but is saddled down by a twist that neither works nor can avoid being redundant. A big mess of a film after the half-way mark. Fincher has never been the most subtle of directors.
a movie that brought my husband and i together when we were first dating.
Overrated and uninteresting. I like Fincher, but this just panders to would-be anarchists and obnoxious youth. It's the filmic equivalent of an upper-middle class white kid wearing a Che Guevara beret.
Whilst it lacks the allegorical potency of Ellis' 'American Psycho', this Palahniuk adaptation captures the jaded ennui of 'the postmodern condition' with hyper-real simulations of dysfunctional masculine identity. Fincher's depiction of Tyler Durden; the idealised alter-ego and schizophrenic actualisation of the Narrator's inferiority complex (a ripped, 'rebel without a cause' Brad Pitt), still deserves acclaim.
The fan club has tried to devalue this movie but its a testament to its excellence that they haven't dented it.
Came for liking the book, stayed for Meat Loaf. Not Fincher's best, but still pretty good.
