Deeply conflicted on this one. On one hand, it's a hugely entertaining tale of a group of indelible weirdo misfits. On the other, yeeeesh, its in-your-face attempt at social commentary is so damn juvenile, so hollow, so ill-formed. An angry teen lashing out at "the world" with no discernable target or purpose. Basically, it's fun as hell if you don't think about it too much. I guess the fun wins out - it gets a B.
(Generous) 7 - What struck me as thrilling in this film all those years ago comes across as strained and juvenile today, and that is due less to any "maturing" (as if) on my part than to the fact that this thing has been overexposed and driven into the ground in the interim. Still, it's eminently watchable.
Maybe it's because its reputation precedes itself... but I kind of find this movie to be rather dull (though wonderfully made and delightfully acted.) It very much comes off as a movie "for the guys" (though I understand that there's some satire going on.) Maybe it was the tonal divide between HOW the story was executed vs. WHAT the story was actually about that made me feel a bit at odds with the film overall.
There really is nothing I can say about this movie that hasn't already been said. I was brought up with films like this, so I have been used to watching it from an early age. I am glad I was brought up with films like Fight Club. This movie will change your life. You have to watch this before you die. Fight Club is a masterpiece.
