It’s deep, personal, and rich, yet fragile when things go wrong. Michel Gondry cleverly explores the memory, relationships, loss, and the connections between these two souls. This film is one of the best films to have the right blend of romance, originality, and surrealism. Sweet oh sweet Clementine. The eternal of Manic Pixie Dream Girl that only exist in Joel's mind
You can erase someone from your mind, but not from your heart. What an exceptional story. Heartbreaking, thought-provoking, and original. It has the ingredients for the kind of film making that you appreciate more and more upon every watch. Jim Carrey is one of a kind. Nobody can do what he does, how he does.
It's always a bit hard to watch Jim Carrey. There is that constant expectation that he's going to start making faces. I would say that is the only drawback to this movie. Otherwise it's a 5 star movie. There's a reference to some of the negative feedback Kate got after making 'Titanic'.
This was the first movie to deeply intrigue me when I was like 13. I think that playing with time is always interesting in movies, and this film does a great job of warping time, leaving details and clues to be found on rewatches. The trippy visuals are really interesting and the soundtrack is also amazing. Particularly Row and Theme by Jon Brian are really sweet and powerful songs. Overall, a mesmerizing experience.
The tricky thing with memory is that it can turn joys of the past into sources of pain. So why not wipe the memories off? With its wonderful combination of science fiction, in-brain chases, absurdism and romantic comedy Eternal Sunshine tries to show the viewer what exactly is at stake here. Identity, being human, fairness. I was surprised how unfair I felt it would feel to be erased. Is there a moral to remembering?
Couple years ago I went to the beach when it was snowing because of this movie. Even though it wasn't Montauk. Rewatched it again, fell in love with the movie even harder. This feels like a sci-fi movie. But instead of going to the outer space, you’re going to a person’s inner state of mind. "You can erase someone from the mind. Getting them out of your heart is another story."
