Synopsis

Between 1975 and 1979, the Khmer Rouge regime caused the death of some 1.8 million people, representing one-quarter of the population of Cambodia. Duch was in charge at M13, a Khmer Rouge-controlled prison, for 4 years before being appointed to the S21 centre in Phnom Penh.

Duch’s bureaucratic mania, with his elaborate system of files and lists adorned with his own copious and explicit annotations of his orders for interrogations and killings, provides the evidence against him; Panh shows it, along with archival footage—the regime’s own filmed documentation of forced labor.
