"City of God, released in 2002, is a masterpiece of a film. It is based on a sad and brutal topic, and it is definitely not an easy watch. The film is based in one of the most notorious favelas of Brazil, called City of God ('Cidade de Deus' in Portuguese) ". Read the full review by the Film Kabinet at filmkabinetblogspot.
The manic style, the infinite number of characters and the lack of any emotional resonance is tiring at first. But as the threads started to come together, its sociopolitical theme about poverty truly starts to affect you. This isn't a movie about any of its characters, but of a culture that perpetuates itself endlessly. No matter how mighty a one might fall here, someone else will surely rise to take his place.
Wish I could reach those boys and tell them is not ok to do that! Nice colors, sweet sound design, really good editing, and outstanding performances. Fernando Meirelles and Katia Lund bring the Favelas to a documentary level. This depiction is really scary as entertaining, which makes it disturbing to watch it at times.
This is by far one of the best films after 15 years and it's hard to admit that many action films and blockbusters took a lot of this film also including the cinematography. It took a lot of years too to watch this film. Still, it far exceeds anything especially if the subject matter is still relevant to this day. It's raw, shocking, brutal, violent, unique, and takes in-depth messages more than a youth movie.
This movie was actually very good. It was very entertaining from start to finish. It’s hard to believe life can be like this but it felt very real. Based on a true story this movie did its job it made you want to know and delve deeper into the stories. With great cinematic choices and great casting choices, their use of the camera in this film was also a great choice it was active and it really felt very considered.
The beauty of the film is how well it weave's a story going back and forth through time about gangsters, druggies, misfits and the history of an apartment, there's no loose ends, every person has closure on their story which normally ends in tragedy. It really shows the two sides of a future where you either get out of the city or become a statistic for the low life expectancy the life as a gangster will bring.
Dommage !
