For me this didn't feel like a Captain America film, more like an Avengers film - focusing on the team and their relationships rather than Cap and his personal goals / story. The main villain is not compelling whatsoever, the run time is way too long, but some of the fight scenes are so much fun and leave you glued to the screen. The introduction of new main characters is also a huge highlight.
More serious issues being touched upon that superheroes are the inadvertent villains and they're not allowed to save the world without several board meetings and plenty of paper work being stamped. Sounds serious, how can we stop this film from being boring? More superheroes! Fighting each other in over the top climatic showdowns! Also foreshadowing even more spin off films feeding that hungry Disney machine.
I never would've guessed that my favorite solo(ish) Avenger flicks would've been Captain America but I'll be damned if they aren't the strongest of the bunch. I mean, ⅔ of Thor's trilogy was a buncha 'meh' and Iron Man kinda lost me in the threequel but Cap was consistently good.
Bref, bon film.
As Marvel expanded, Captain America is the one who got the most interesting storylines. Other mini-franchises look good, have a character with an "act", and get by on the charisma of being just goofy enough. But the last two CA movies have the distinction of feeling like they're going somewhere—even if that somewhere isn't entirely satisfying. Bonus points for knowing we don't need Spiderman's origin story again.
Marvel returns to tell what happens when heroes also kills civilians under the heat of battle in another very satisfying political superhero thriller. Excellent effects with a lot of superheroes fighting superheroes manage to stay fresh and the new heroes leave lasting impact, but the film could have benefited from a few extra scenes so that we would know a little more about why characters choose the side they do.
