I have no doubt that this is a tour de force for both Davis and Vidor, but in my opinion, her intensity is too overwhelming and pushes everything else into the background. For instance, I would’ve love to see more of the conflict between her and Cotten’s characters. In any case, this is a powerhouse of a movie.
Bette Davis is always so dramatic, almost unbearable in every movie. You notice that Vidor had many problems controlling her, until the magnificent ending when Davis give up all the tricks with eyes or hair and forcing that she need to be the center of the movie. When she gave up, she became the center. Is magnificent modern adaption of Bovary and Vidor made it superbly.
