Our take

A comedy… from Bergman? Yes! Before the similarly sweet Smiles of a Summer Night, the Swedish director made this mature look at long-term relationships and fidelity. With some pathos, too—a byproduct of Bergman’s intelligent psychological insight and always impressive, detailed characterisation.
