9 Fingers follows the travails of Magloire, a man on the run from the cops who is captured by a criminal gang and forced to take part in a heist. When the heist goes wrong, he and the gang flee aboard a cargo ship, which soon becomes the mysterious, microcosmic universe.

Some striking scenes notwithstanding, this movie doesn’t achieve the delirium it aspires to. It’s often flat and tame, and obvious in the wrong ways.

The whole thing is consistently overtly ridiculous. Boys playing dress-up… a start-stop rhythm thwarting base genre pleasures, and constant anarcho-charlatan pontificating give the voyage a scent of funhouse-fandom charade. Yet wrapped as it is in that oneiric slow pull common to the films of Chilean fabulist Raúl Ruiz and punctuated with a zany, near-crazed freedom that seems truly punk, these dual impulses of sinister gravity and the flippant play somehow magically live one inside the other.

Ossang has perfected his formula to a formal perfection that is incredibly outstanding: Noir punk expressionist post-apocalypse crime cinema, or maybe just in Nicole Brenez words, The Grand Insurrectionary Style, a remarkable chapter of cinema’s history that is still on the writing.
