Colossal waste of time. I only give it two stars as the visuals are beautiful and the cameraman/woman did his best with the luckluster stories in the anthology. Almost all stories are completly meaningless. It could have worked with some humor but the movie takes itself too seriously for that. Very disappointed.
It's so full of clichés! (If you don't know what to make of your dialogues show people dancing and singing.) There are only two remarkable exceptions: Elia Suleiman with his laconic puzzle of absudities and Gaspard Noé with his investigation of rituals underneath the surface of modern life.
It is a very enjoyable film where you are always tying to think it might be a puzzle film with forked paths, but in the end the stories are good in themselves and hang on very well on their own, for its drama, its romance, its suspense and its humour. A good example of how these kind of films can be good exercises and not just 'je t'aime...' ones... Personally, the inclusion of Kusturica is a real delight...
*2.5* Not a bad film overall, somewhat similar in its structure and idea to Paris, je t'aime, but not nearly as strong. Most of the stories feel underdeveloped, sketchy and don't quite put any interesting messages forward, apart from 'this is what life in Havana's like'. Otherwise, it's a curious glimpse into daily lives and routines of ordinary Cuban citizens, stripped of touristic-cinematic sparkle, which is cool.
This film gives a snapshot of live in Havana through the eyes of differing people; one for each day of the week. Some days a tourists outside view, and some days a real experience of having Havana as a home. Beautiful places, people and music entices one to want to visit.
A mixture of standard 'foreigner in exotic lands' (Monday and Tuesday) and 'oh, look how weird their religion is' (Friday and Sunday) fare. Thursday with Cecilia was excruciating - might have been bearable without the music. Wednesday was the best, though not much happened. Saturday was second best with Cecilia's mother struggling to juggle multiple otherwise middle-class jobs to get by. A mixed bag, at best.
my favourite was thursday - the most stylistically striking i liked how it couldn't be symmetrical enough or the angles of every shot couldn't be wide enough. Friday was fun, sensual, intimate, tense and terrifying really liked it. Sunday was the cutest had a comforting sense of hustle bustle and Santeria. What was your favourite day?
película que explora las entrañas de la idiosincracia y modus vivendi cubano, intimista, invasora para acercarnos a la verdad cubana, pero respetando lo que es costumbre y tradición, de ahí el mérito de presentar siete historias distintas de un mismo lugar.
