3X3D

Jean-Luc Godard, Peter Greenaway, Edgar Pêra Portugal, 2013
Of course the Godard entry was the reason this omnibus was a must-see. Somewhat paradoxically, though, The Three Disasters is only essential viewing for serious Godard completists, and yet I'm not so sure that those completists will find anything particularly new here--the 3D format notwithstanding--in relation to his late-career body of work... Surprisingly, it was the Peter Greenaway effort, Just in Time, that stole the show for me...

No surprise that the festival's most brilliant movie was Jean-Luc Godard's The Three Disasters, an 18-minute 3-D piece that unfortunately is embedded in the 3-D triptych 3x3D, the other two parts of which, by directors who shall remain nameless, are unwatchable. Not only is this interlude [in the Godard] disorientingly handsome, it also introduces a phenomenologicalcoup de technique that could have been lifted straight out of Michael Snow's playbook, in which the image slotted into the right side of our glasses becomes momentarily flipped.

["The Three Disasters"] is another of Godard's visual-aural essays in the Histoire(s) du cinéma vein, and the extra dimension adds yet another stimulating layer to his expert mix of film clips, original footage and narration derived from various literary sources... The other two shorts couldn't help but pale in comparison, but Greenaway at least started this barely-an-hour feature on an invitingly heady note with "Just in Time,"
