“I had been very uninterested in American and foreign narrative films. I was self-taught in film history for a long time, and only saw films which, from hearsay, I thought might interest me. I was absolutely disinterested in contemporary foreign narrative film. At that point I was very arrogant about it. I was basically committed to American poetics, American film, and contemporary work. When I look back on it now, it was a very narrow-minded commitment.”
